Professional Bio

Abbey K. Elder has been working across the open access and open education fields for nearly a decade. As the Open Education Services Librarian at Iowa State University and Statewide Open Education Coordinator for the Iowa Open Education Action Team, Abbey coordinates support for practitioners interested in engaging in open educational practices. Her introductory books on open education, including The OER Starter Kit, The OER Starter Kit Workbook, and The OER Starter Kit for Program Managers, have been used in professional development programs across the United States.

Abbey has extensive experience advancing OER publishing efforts at Iowa State University, where she supports faculty and staff as they develop new open textbooks and other OER for their courses. In addition to these services, Abbey also develops programming and professional development for educators on related topics such as open access publishing, copyright, open education history, and open pedagogy.

Abbey's research agenda focuses on the foundations of and connections between open movements like open education, open access, and open science, with the intention of broadening access to the Open conversation through education and outreach.
